US companies Ultra Safe Nuclear Corp. (USNC) and Peregrine Turbine Technologies (PTT) are to collaborate with the aim of integrating USNC’s Pylon reactor with PTT’s patented supercritical CO2 (sCO2) energy conversion system and advanced heat exchanger technologies. This partnership “focuses on enhancing clean energy generation through advanced nuclear and turbine technologies”.

A new publication in the IAEA’s Technical Report Series, Status of Molten Salt Reactor Technology, outlines the current status of molten salt reactor (MSR) technology around the world. It reviews the history of MSRs and takes a look at the current research and development activities taking place. The advantages of this technology, including a smaller high level waste footprint and passive safety features, as well as some of the technical challenges, such as developing components capable of operating in very high temperature environments, are detailed.

The UK Space Agency is funding two nuclear projects as part of the second phase of investment awarded through its £20m ($25m) International Bilateral Fund (IBF). Rolls-Royce and BWXT receive £1.18m for their collaboration on fission nuclear systems for space power missions. The University of Leicester and its international partners receive more than £783,000 to identify a range of mission opportunities for UK space nuclear power technologies. The collaboration also includes the development of hybrid power systems with existing US conversion technologies.

Two projects featuring nuclear energy are among 11 international space projects selected to receive funding from the UK Space Agency. Rolls-Royce's collaboration with BWXT receives GBP1.18 million (USD1.5 million) to further its work on fission nuclear systems for space power missions, while an international project led by the University of Leicester receives GBP800,000.

US-based Oklo has completed the second phase of the Thermal Hydraulic Experimental Test Article (THETA) testing campaign in collaboration with the US Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). THETA is a sodium fixture with instrumentation installed at ANL’s Mechanisms Engineer Test Loop (METL) facility.

US-based nuclear waste storage and disposal company Deep Isolation has been selected by SHINE Technologies as its preferred solution for storage and disposal of the high-level waste (HLW) that will remain as a residue after deployment of SHINE’s technology for recycling used nuclear fuel (UNF). The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly drive forward used fuel recycling supported by a safe and scalable solution for the resulting waste streams.
