In a new report, “What a waste: How fast-fission power can provide clean energy from nuclear waste”, environmental group RePlanet advocates recycling used nuclear fuel as fuel for advanced fast reactors. While Europe's nuclear power reactors "have a long history of safe use, and have provided prodigious quantities of clean electricity for decades", they use less than 1% of the energy potential in the natural uranium used to make their fuel, the report notes. Moreover, irradiated fuel assemblies removed from reactors are considered “nuclear waste”.

EDF has demonstrated commitment to safety at its Belleville nuclear power plant in central France by introducing additional methods to prepare for accident management and using innovative approaches in the training of plant staff, an expert team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has concluded. The team also identified areas for further enhancement, for example in operation, maintenance and operating experience.

Netherlands Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Eric Wiebes has said that more nuclear power may join solar and wind in the Dutch energy mix after 2030, in particular small modular reactors (SMR) with a capacity of up to 400MW.

Researchers have found that small amounts of plutonium were included inside cesium-rich microparticles (CsMPs) emitted during the Fukushima Daiichi accident in 2011, the University of Helsinki reports.

A used fuel reprocessing plant in the southern Urals region of Russia is the most likely source of a release of the isotope ruthenium-106 detected across Europe in late 2017, a study has concluded. No incident has, however, been reported at the Mayak facility or any other Russian nuclear facility and Rosatom has always maintained this.

More than 40 nuclear associations representing over 80,000 scientists have called on the Clean Energy Ministerial Conference - which will be held in Vancouver between 28 and 29 May - to commit to doubling public investment in nuclear-related R&D and innovation within the next five years. Their declaration was signed yesterday at the International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP) , in Juan-les-Pins, France.

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation's (ANSTO) medical isotope production facility announced in January that it had become the second in the world to install a high-resolution monitoring system to track emissions from its medical radioisotopes production facility under an initiative led by the US Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).
ANSTO and PNNL said the detector system was installed in October at the medical isotope production facility at Lucas Heights. The first such system had been installed in a monitor stack at the Institute for Radioelements (IRE) at Fleurus in Belgium. Both IRE and ANSTO produce molybdenum-99 by irradiating uranium in a reactor. The process releases gaseous fission products including xenon isotopes. While representing no danger to the public, the isotopes resemble those produced by a nuclear explosion.

The US is buying 32t of Iranian heavy water to help Iran meet the terms of last July's landmark nuclear deal under which Iran agreed to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief. The agreement was signed on 22 April in Vienna between Iran and officials from the six countries that negotiated the nuclear deal - E3/EU+3 (China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK and the USA plus the European Union). It calls for the US Department of Energy's (DOE's) Isotope Program to purchase the heavy water from a subsidiary of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) for about $8.6m, officials said. They said the heavy water will be stored at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee and then resold on the commercial market for research purposes.

Iranian officials and a visiting European Union (EU) delegation headed by European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini on 16 April signed various memoranda of understanding for cooperation on research. Iran's participation in the EU Horizon 2020 framework programme was also discussed, Iranian media reported. The European commission, and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) issued a joint statement on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy which would include establishment of a regular high-level dialogue meeting once a year (the Framework for Partnership on Nuclear Energy) to review topics of common interest in the nuclear field.
