US-based nuclear waste storage and disposal company Deep Isolation has been selected by SHINE Technologies as its preferred solution for storage and disposal of the high-level waste (HLW) that will remain as a residue after deployment of SHINE’s technology for recycling used nuclear fuel (UNF). The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly drive forward used fuel recycling supported by a safe and scalable solution for the resulting waste streams.

Russia’s Mining & chemical Combine (MCC - part of Rosatom) in Zheleznogorsk (Krasnoyarsk) has completed all R&D on a project for a molten salt research reactor (IZhSR - Issledovatelskovo Zhidko Solevovo Reaktora) MCC Director Dmitry Kolupaev told Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev Rosatom Alexei Likhachev during his visit to the enterprise that the key stages had been completed. A preliminary design has been developed that describes the fundamental decisions required for the physical launch of the IZhSR. This was achieved in cooperation with many other Russian organisations.

Moltex Energy Canada has been granted a patent for its used nuclear fuel recycling process in Canada. The patent covers Moltex’s process for converting any uranium oxide fuel into molten salt reactor fuel, known as WAste To Stable Salt (WATSS). Using this process, used fuel is converted into several parts. Transuranics – the long-lived, man-made elements – along with some uranium and fission products are extracted into a salt.
