A new publication in the IAEA’s Technical Report Series, Status of Molten Salt Reactor Technology, outlines the current status of molten salt reactor (MSR) technology around the world. It reviews the history of MSRs and takes a look at the current research and development activities taking place. The advantages of this technology, including a smaller high level waste footprint and passive safety features, as well as some of the technical challenges, such as developing components capable of operating in very high temperature environments, are detailed.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced that its operating and maintenance subsidiary, Nawah Energy Company, has successfully launched the reactor of unit 4 of the Barakah NPP in the Al Dhafra Region of Abu Dhabi. This marks its initial production of heat through nuclear fission, used for generating electricity by turning a turbine with steam. In the coming weeks, unit 4 will be linked to the national electricity grid and will gradually increase its power output to full capacity.

Holtec International has announced a new power plant design which combines the benefits of nuclear with those of solar. The Combined Nuclear/Solar Plant (CNSP) features the company's SMR-300 small modular reactor, its HI-THERM HSP solar thermal system, together with its Green Boiler energy storage system.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has signed another memorandum of understanding (MOUs) related to small modular reactors at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the original 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) in Dubai. The latest agreement is with Terrestrial Energy, signed by ENEC CEO Mohamed Al Hammadi, and Terrestrial Energy CEO Simon Irish.

The European Council has adopted its position on the proposed Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA), which is intended to bolster Europe's manufacturing output in technologies needed for decarbonisation. As with the European Parliament's position, issued last month, nuclear power has been included in the list of "strategic" technologies.

US-based NuScale Power Corporation is partnering with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to perform a techno-economic assessment (TEA) of a NuScale small modular reactor’s (SMR’s) ability to implement a cost-effective steam heat augmentation design. According to NuScale, the study will be based on process data from a US chemical facility to help the plant meet its electric power and process steam requirements with NuScale’s technology. This will be a highly collaborative effort with engineers from ORNL and NuScale forming a composite engineering team. The study should be completed within one year.

The US Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has rescinded a notice of intent to award (NOITA) a contract made in August on behalf of the Department of the Air Force to US-based fission technology company Oklo to provide heat and electricity to the Eielson Air Force Base near Fairbanks in Alaska. This was part of the Air Force's micro-reactor pilot programme initiated in response to the Fiscal Year 2019 National Defense Authorisation Act, which required DOD to identify potential military locations to site, construct, and operate a micro-reactor.
