The restart of Argentina’s Heavy Water Industrial Plant (PIAP - Planta Industrial de Agua Pesada) at Arroyito in Neuquén, planned for 2025, is seen as opening possibilities for clean energy generation and for export. Following a recent visit to the plant, Adriana Serquis, President of the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA - Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica), said PIAP was a “strategic asset” for Argentina.

Argentina has approved construction of build two hydroelectric dams in southern Patagonia, as the Rio Negro province cancelled plans to build a nuclear plant because of a lack of public support despite the personal support of provincial governor Alberto Weretilneck. Rio Negro had been one of a number of locations under consideration for the plant, Nucleoelétrica Argentina SA said on 29 August. Argentina currently has three operating pressurised heavy water reactors – two at the Atucha NPP and one at Embalse.

Argentine President Mauricio Macri signed cooperation agreements with China worth $15bn on 17 May including a $12.5bn agreement for the construction and financing of two nuclear power reactors (Argentina’s fourth and fifth). The agreements were signed in Beijing during Macri's state visit to China, where he participated earlier in an international meeting on the Belt and Road global infrastructure initiative promoted by the Chinese government.

Canada’s SNC-Lavalin announced on 24 November that it has been awarded a contract from Argentina's Nucleoelectrica Argentina SA (NA-SA) for the Candu nuclear new build project at the Atucha NPP in the district of Zarate, about 100 kilometres from Buenos Aires. If the project is realised, it will be the first new Candu built since unit 2 at Romania’s Cernavoda NPP came on line in 2007.

A joint venture between Tecna and Siemens has been awarded a contract by Argentina's National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) to supply the balance of plant (BOP) for the domestically-designed prototype CAREM-25 small integral reactor. The contract, signed on 3 August, was the outcome of a three-stage tender, launched in 2014. It covers the conventional island and the tertiary circuit, as well as the demineralization plant and the auxiliary boiler. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018, followed by trial operation ending in July 2019, and finally commercial operation.

China and Argentina on 1 July signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) reaffirming plans to construct two new nuclear power reactors in Argentina with finance from Chinese banks. Last November, Argentina signed deals with China for the construction of its fourth and fifth nuclear units: a third Candu pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR) at the Atucha site and a pressurised water reactor (PWR) at an unspecified site. The projects are worth around $15bn and China will contribute 85% of the necessary funds, according to a statement from Argentine president's office at the time.
