One-and-a-half times more people support the use of nuclear energy than oppose it, according to a multinational public opinion poll conducted by market research firm Savanta on behalf of energy consultancy Radiant Energy Group.

The UK’s Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS), part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), is collaborating with renewable marine technology specialist Smart Green Shipping (SGS) to investigate retrofitting new sail technology on its specialist nuclear transport ships. SGS is developing unique FastRig retrofit sails and sustainable technology for commercial ships.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Review Service for Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management, Decommissioning and Remediation (Artemis) team on 25 May concluded a 10-day mission to Lithuania. The team said Lithuania’s national programme for managing radioactive waste and for decommissioning demonstrated a commitment to safety, while also noting areas where it could be further enhanced.

With 44 days to go until the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow, leaders from ten nations plus the European Commission, European Council and United Nations last week joined US President Joe Biden in a closed-door forum at which they underscored the urgency of strengthening climate ambition ahead of COP26 and beyond. The USA and the EU also announced a Global Methane Pledge to cut global methane pollution by at least 30% from 2020 levels by 2030 through collective action.

The Group of Seven (G7) countries will lead a technology-driven transition to net zero, according to a joint statement at the end of their three-day summit in Cornwall, England. The G7 is an inter-governmental political forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the USA. As host of the first in-person G7 Summit in almost two years, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked the other leaders "to seize the opportunity to fight and build back better from coronavirus, uniting to make the future fairer, greener and more prosperous".

A group of 46 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from 18 countries has written to Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, calling for the inclusion of nuclear energy in the EU taxonomy for sustainable investments. The exclusion of nuclear, they say, would promote a strategy that is "clearly inadequate" to decarbonise the region's economy.

Nuclear will continue to decline according to a new report written from an antinuclear point of view. At this point there is no obvious sign that the international nuclear industry could turn the decline into a promising future, it says.
