Dr Fidele Ndahayo, CEO of the Rwanda Atomic Energy Board (RAEB), announced at the recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference that the country plans to integrate peaceful nuclear technology solutions to trigger the socio-economic transformation leading to realisation of its long-term Vision 2050. “Rwanda’s Country Programme Framework highlights several priority areas such as Food & Agriculture, Human Health, Water Resources Management, Environment Management and Energy & Industry where the use of nuclear science solutions is going to make a significant positive impact,” he said. “Along with our efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, we are committed to promoting the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for sustainable socio – economic development.”

The XII International Forum Atomexpo-2022 was held in Sochi (Russia) on November 21-22, attracting the heads of key companies in the global nuclear industry, government agencies, international and public organisations. This year, the forum was attended by about 2,500 people from 65 countries. Discussions were held on a wide range of issues including green financing, digital engineering, construction of new NPPs, raw material supply for the nuclear fuel cycle, prospects for the development of onshore small modular reactors (SMRs) and the role of social movements in popularising the nuclear industry. A number of documents were also signed on the sidelines of the forum.

Specialists from twenty-one countries in Africa have for the first time formed an African Association of Radiopharmacy (AfrAR) to strengthen their capacities and better meet national needs for the safe preparation and administration of radiopharmaceuticals used in diagnosing, treating and managing cancer and other diseases, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on 12 April.

Of the 220 research reactors in operation today, only seven are on the African continent. In other words, with 17.2% of the world population and the strongest expected growth in the coming years, Africans have access to only 3% of the world's nuclear research reactor capacity. Marguerite Leonardi, senior advisor at NPC Consulting & Engineering, and Professor Vincent Lukanda Mwamba, Commissaire Général of the Commissariat Général à l’Energie Atomique, explain why that is a concern and why the research reactor in Kinshasa should be restarted urgently.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has marked the tenth anniversary of its Network on Environmental Remediation and Management (ENVIRONET) initiative by showcasing projects it has supported, lessons learned and plans to ensure future activities inside and outside the fuel cycle benefit from an integrated approach to remediation.

Sergey Kiriyenko, director general of Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, told journalists at the International Forum ATOMEXPO 2016 in Moscow on 31 May that the 10-year portfolio of Rosatom's orders for construction of NPPs will increase in 2016. "At the end of 2015, the order portfolio was $110bn. The 2016 we plan to finish at $136bn," he said, adding that 34 Russian design NPP units were now under construction in different regions of the world. He added that the cumulative portfolio of orders, including construction of NPPs, fuel supplies, uranium products delivery, services etc., exceeded $300bn.
