The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Nuclear Energy has concluded the first-ever US Africa Nuclear Energy Summit (USANES) in Accra, Ghana. The summit was organised in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and the Nuclear Power Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. DOE said it “provided a platform for crucial dialogues and international cooperation on nuclear energy” where “participants from across the continent discussed the future of nuclear power and laid a foundation for sustainable nuclear energy growth in the region”.

World Nuclear Association and the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) have signed a memorandum of understanding to support the economic growth and sustainable energy development of the African continent through the use of nuclear energy.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Saudi Arabia is considering a Chinese proposal to build a NPP. Citing Saudi sources acquainted with the situation, WSJ said China National Nuclear Corp (SNNS) had submitted a bid to construct a nuclear plant in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, close to the border with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Specialists from twenty-one countries in Africa have for the first time formed an African Association of Radiopharmacy (AfrAR) to strengthen their capacities and better meet national needs for the safe preparation and administration of radiopharmaceuticals used in diagnosing, treating and managing cancer and other diseases, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on 12 April.

Speaking to African heads of state and representatives from Russian, African, and international business and government agencies, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachov yesterday emphasised the benefits of nuclear energy in job creation and regional economic development. At the Russia-Africa Summit in Sochi, Russia, Likhachov said global inequality in technological, industrial and socio-economic development was "acutely felt" in Africa.
