The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Nuclear Energy has concluded the first-ever US Africa Nuclear Energy Summit (USANES) in Accra, Ghana. The summit was organised in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and the Nuclear Power Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission. DOE said it “provided a platform for crucial dialogues and international cooperation on nuclear energy” where “participants from across the continent discussed the future of nuclear power and laid a foundation for sustainable nuclear energy growth in the region”.

World Nuclear Association and the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE) have signed a memorandum of understanding to support the economic growth and sustainable energy development of the African continent through the use of nuclear energy.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Saudi Arabia is considering a Chinese proposal to build a NPP. Citing Saudi sources acquainted with the situation, WSJ said China National Nuclear Corp (SNNS) had submitted a bid to construct a nuclear plant in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, close to the border with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The XII International Forum Atomexpo-2022 was held in Sochi (Russia) on November 21-22, attracting the heads of key companies in the global nuclear industry, government agencies, international and public organisations. This year, the forum was attended by about 2,500 people from 65 countries. Discussions were held on a wide range of issues including green financing, digital engineering, construction of new NPPs, raw material supply for the nuclear fuel cycle, prospects for the development of onshore small modular reactors (SMRs) and the role of social movements in popularising the nuclear industry. A number of documents were also signed on the sidelines of the forum.

A ceremony marking the pouring of first concrete for the foundation slab of unit 2 of Egypt’s El Dabaa NPP has taken place. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Electricity & Renewable Energy of Egypt, Mohammed Shaker; the Chairman of the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plant Authority (NPPA), Amged El-Wakil; the General Director of Rosatom, Alexei Likhachev; the Senior Vice President of JSC ASE (Rosatom Engineering Division) for NPP Construction Project Management, Alexander Korchagin; and project teams ASE and NPPA. This came after the Egyptian Nuclear & Radiological Regulatory Authority issued a permit for unit 2 construction in October.

El Dabaa, Egypt’s first nuclear station, will have four Russia-supplied Generation III+ VVER-1200 pressurised water reactors, with the first unit expected to be online in 2026.
On 31 October, the Nuclear and Radiological Regulation Authority of Egypt issued the construction permit for Unit 2 of El Dabaa. Construction of Unit 1 began on 20 July 2022.
