Netherlands-based start-up, Thorizon, and Belgium-based engineering and consulting company Tractebel (part of France’s Engie) have signed a strategic three-year partnership to advance Thorizon’ molten salt reactor design. Tractebel will provide engineering services for the Thorizon One molten salt reactor, including support on the conceptual design, computational modelling, cost estimates and design reviews.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has directed staff to issue a construction permit to Kairos Power for the company’s proposed Hermes non-power test reactor to be built at the Heritage Center Industrial Park in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The permit authorises Kairos to build a 35 MWt reactor that would use molten salt to cool the reactor core.

Kairos Power will build the Hermes molten salt-cooled demonstration reactor at the Heritage Center Industrial Park in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. It is the first non-water cooled reactor to be approved for construction in the USA in more than 50 years.

US power utility Southern Company, TerraPower and Core Power have started pumped-salt operations in the Integrated Effects Test (IET), as a step towards development of Generation-IV molten salt reactor technology, namely TerraPower’s first-of-a-kind Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR).

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been selected as the core company in charge of the conceptual design of a demonstration fast reactor which the government aims to put into operation in the 2040s. MHI will oversee both the conceptual design as well as research and development for a sodium-cooled fast reactor in partnership with Mitsubishi FBR Systems (MFBR), an MHI Group engineering company established in 2007 to handle the development and design of fast reactors. The design work for the new reactor is scheduled to begin in fiscal 2024.
