The Swedish government unveils a roadmap which envisages the construction of new nuclear generating capacity equivalent to at least two large-scale reactors by 2035, with up to ten new large-scale reactors coming online by 2045.

Vattenfall is applying to the municipality of Varberg for a detailed plan to enable the construction of new reactors on the Värö Peninsula, to the west of the existing Ringhals nuclear power plant in Sweden. The announcement came as the government launches a review of the permitting process.

Sweden’s Government and the Swedish Democrats have introduced a new bill to parliament – New Nuclear Power for Sweden – a first step. The bill proposes that the provision in the Environmental Code which prohibits the construction of nuclear reactors in places other than where nuclear power is already available be removed. In addition, it proposes removing a provision limiting the number of reactors in operation to ten. The legislative amendments are expected to enter into force on 1 January 2024.

Sweden's new centre-right coalition government which formally took office on 18 October with Moderate party leader Ulf Kristersson as Prime Minister, has adopted a programme which calls for the expansion of nuclear power. Four parties, comprising the Christian Democrats, the Liberals, the Moderates and the Sweden Democrats announced a written agreement on policies – the Tidöavtalet – on 14 October. The agreement was named after the negotiations that took place during the week at Tidö castle outside Västerås. The four parties have a narrow parliamentary majority. However, the far-right Sweden Democrats are not part of the coalition, although the government will need its support to achieve a parliamentary majority for its policies.

Sweden's incoming centre-right coalition government has adopted a positive stance towards nuclear energy, calling for state-owned energy company Vattenfall to investigate the possible restart of Ringhals units 1 and 2, as well as to prepare for the construction of new reactors.
