The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its latest report, Electricity 2024, dedicates a significant amount of space to nuclear power – a departure from its previous studies which treated it as peripheral. In its press release on the new report, IEA says the increase in electricity generation from renewables and nuclear "appears to be pushing the power sector's emissions into structural decline". Over the next three years, low-emissions generation is set to rise at twice the annual growth rate between 2018 and 2023. Global emissions from electricity generation are expected to decrease by 2.4% in 2024, followed by smaller declines in 2025 and 2026.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) has concluded in Estonia. The eight-day mission was conducted at the request of the Government. The team concluded that Estonia has developed a comprehensive assessment of its nuclear power infrastructure needs to enable the government to decide whether to launch a nuclear power programme.

Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB) says it has completed the first stage of demolition of buildings at the Unit for Decommissioning of Caldas (UDC) in southern Minas Gerais, which is currently undertaking clean-up of a former uranium mine. Altogether 12 buildings were demolished at the industrial plant comprising 1,900 square metres of disused structures. The cooling tower was the last structure demolished in early September. According to INB, the area where the buildings were located will be restructured using local soil.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Saudi Arabia is considering a Chinese proposal to build a NPP. Citing Saudi sources acquainted with the situation, WSJ said China National Nuclear Corp (SNNS) had submitted a bid to construct a nuclear plant in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, close to the border with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Iran has resolved two outstanding inquiries from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) related to the presence of highly enriched uranium (HEU) particles at several sites. The confidential quarterly report by the IAEA, which is routinely leaked to the press, said inspectors no longer had questions on uranium particles found to be enriched to 83.7% at its underground Fordow facility. This had resulted in tension for the past several months although some resolution was achieved in March following a visit to Tehran by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. Iran had insisted at that time that those particles were a by-product of its current enrichment as particles can reach higher enrichment levels in fluctuations. “The agency informed Iran that, following its evaluation of the data, the agency had assessed that the information provided was not inconsistent with Iran’s explanation ... and that the agency had no further questions on this matter at this stage,” the report said.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) legal experts have delivered the Agency’s first-ever short introductory course on nuclear law for university students, as part of a pilot partnerships concluded between the IAEA and six universities in Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Jamaica, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It was held at Khalifa University in the UAE and was attended by students from different academic disciplines, as well as officials and representatives of the University faculty. This is the first course in a series, with five more universities to follow as hosts of this course in the coming months.

Indústrias Nucleares do Brasil (INB) on 25 November at the Nuclear Fuel Factory (FCN), in Resende, inaugurated the tenth cascade of ultracentrifuges, completing the first phase of the Uranium Isotopic Enrichment Plant. This will reduce Brazil’s dependence on contracting services abroad for the production of fuel for its NPPs. The start-up of the tenth cascade means production capacity will meet 70% of the demand for refuelling of unit 1 of the Angra NPP - an increase of approximately 5%.

Brazil’s Empresa Brasileira de Participações em Energia Nuclear e Binacional (ENBPar) and Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which seeks to promote energy nuclear as a “green” energy source, safe and inducing socioeconomic growth.
