The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its latest report, Electricity 2024, dedicates a significant amount of space to nuclear power – a departure from its previous studies which treated it as peripheral. In its press release on the new report, IEA says the increase in electricity generation from renewables and nuclear "appears to be pushing the power sector's emissions into structural decline". Over the next three years, low-emissions generation is set to rise at twice the annual growth rate between 2018 and 2023. Global emissions from electricity generation are expected to decrease by 2.4% in 2024, followed by smaller declines in 2025 and 2026.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Saudi Arabia is considering a Chinese proposal to build a NPP. Citing Saudi sources acquainted with the situation, WSJ said China National Nuclear Corp (SNNS) had submitted a bid to construct a nuclear plant in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, close to the border with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) legal experts have delivered the Agency’s first-ever short introductory course on nuclear law for university students, as part of a pilot partnerships concluded between the IAEA and six universities in Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Jamaica, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It was held at Khalifa University in the UAE and was attended by students from different academic disciplines, as well as officials and representatives of the University faculty. This is the first course in a series, with five more universities to follow as hosts of this course in the coming months.

The INSC 30-year anniversary ceremony was initially scheduled for September 2020, but had to be pushed back to 2021 because of the global Covid-19 pandemic. The International Nuclear Societies Council (INSC), a global forum for nuclear societies, has celebrated its 30-year anniversary with a ceremony held in Vienna on 22 September this year, the organisation announced.

The INSC was formally set up on 11 November 1990 in Washington DC by 11 founding members including: the American Nuclear Society (ANS); the Argentinian Association of Nuclear Technology; the Atomic Energy Society of Japan; the Australian Nuclear Association; the Canadian Nuclear Society; the Chinese Nuclear Society; the European Nuclear Society, the Korean Nuclear Society; the Latin American Section of ANS; the Mexican Nuclear Society; and the Nuclear Energy Society of Taiwan.

Its primary mission was to foster ongoing cooperation, communication and exchange of information among the world’s nuclear societies, serve as a global NGO in nuclear matters of international importance, and represent the views and positions of nuclear professionals.

Policy uncertainty is ‘preventing industry from making investment decisions’ Policy uncertainty in a number of countries is preventing the nuclear industry from making investment decisions and “forthright recognition” by governments of the value of nuclear energy would encourage policymakers to explicitly include nuclear in their long-term energy plans and commitments under the Paris Agreement, the International Energy Agency has said.

The Paris-based agency said in a report on meeting climate goals that nuclear policy uncertainty is partly the result of inconsistencies between stated policy goals – such as climate change mitigation – and policy actions.

While some countries maintain they can meet decarbonisation objectives while phasing out nuclear (Belgium, Germany, Spain, Switzerland) or reducing its share (France), others continue to recognise the need to increase nuclear reliance: China, Russia, India, Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland, Hungary, Poland, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the UK and Uzbekistan.

In late 2018, the EU long-term energy strategy clearly stated that nuclear power – together with renewables – will form the backbone of the EU power system in order to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, the IEA said. At the same time, ongoing EU taxonomy discussions regarding the eligibility of nuclear power generation for sustainability funding highlight the difficulties in recognising the contribution that nuclear energy makes to climate change mitigation.

China's two biggest state-owned nuclear power operators on 17 March a joint venture (JV), Hualong International Nuclear Power Technology Co, to export their Generation III Hualong One nuclear power reactor. The JV, based in Beijing is an equal joint venture between China General Nuclear Power Corp (CGN) and China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC). The company chairman is CGN's Zou Yongping and the general manager is CNNC's Xu Pengfei.
