The governments of Canada’s Saskatchewan and New Brunswick provinces have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance co-operation on the development of small modular reactor (SMR) technologies. It enables the two provinces and their utility Crowns, SaskPower and New Brunswick Power, to share experiences, knowledge and successes on deployment plans, supply chain development, Indigenous relations, labour market development, regulations and other areas.

Ontario-based BWX Technologies (BWXT) has been awarded an engineering contract by GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) for its BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) reactor pressure vessel (RPV). Work associated with the contract includes engineering analysis, design support, manufacturing and procurement preparations. John MacQuarrie, president of BWXT Commercial Operations said intricate design projects such as the RPV for GEH’s BWRX-300 “are well-suited for BWXT’s engineering capabilities”.

The RPV, which contains the reactor core and associated internals, is the largest component within the BWRX-300.
BWXT said work associated with the contract includes engineering analysis, design support, manufacturing and procurement preparations.
In October, GEH announced it had entered into a teaming agreement with BWXT Canada to cooperate on engineering and procurement to support the design, manufacturing and commercialisation of the BWRX-300 SMR.
Earlier this month, GEH announced that the BWRX-300 had achieved a significant pre-licensing milestone in Canada with the completion of phases one and two of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s (CNSC) vendor design review process.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) says it has completed a combined phases 1 & 2 vendor design review (VDR) of GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s BWRX-300 boiling water reactor. The VDR takes place during the design process and gives CNSC an opportunity to provide early feedback. It is an optional service provided by CNSC at the request of a vendor. It does not involve issuance of a licence, or influence subsequent CNSC decisions.

GEH said the BWRX-300 is the first SMR technology to have completed two phases of the CNSC’s vendor design review process.
Sean Sexstone, the company’s executive vice-president of advanced nuclear, said: “The successful completion of these phases and the feedback that we have received on our SMR design are important steps in the deployment of this technology.”
In 2020, GEH made its first submittal to the CNSC for its review of the BWRX-300 design. Since then, GEH has made submittals addressing 19 vendor design review areas that included general plant description, control system and facilities, research and development, and design process.
After a detailed assessment of reactor designs, in 2021 Ontario Power Generation (OPG) selected the GEH BWRX-300 as the technology to be deployed at its Darlington nuclear power station site.
