International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts have observed directional anti-personnel mines on the periphery of the site of Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP), Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in his latest update.

In his latest update, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said experts have carried out additional inspections and walkdowns at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) over the past week – so far without observing any heavy military equipment, explosives or mines. However, they are still awaiting access to the rooftops of the reactor.

Following a day’s delay, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi final reached the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) on 15 June, accompanying the eighth rotation of the Support & Assistance Mission to Zaporizhia (ISAMZ) which has been permanently stationed at the plant since September 2022. Grossi has strengthened the mission replacing two inspectors with four – specialists from Austria, France, South Korea, and Morocco.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says Director General Rafael Grossi will brief the UN Security Council on his proposals for safeguarding Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) on 30 May. “Grossi is planning to brief the UN Security Council on the nuclear safety and security situation” during a meeting chaired by Switzerland, according to a statement sent by the Agency to AFP.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 14-member Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhia (ISAMZ) team of experts arrived at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia NPP on the morning of 1 September after being delayed for several hours by shelling near the site. The IAEA said on Twitter that the team had arrived at the plant “to conduct indispensable nuclear safety and security and safeguards activities”. Reuters said its reporter saw the team arrive in a large convoy with a heavy presence of Russian soldiers nearby. Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of trying to sabotage the team’s visit to the NPP, which is controlled by Russian forces but operated by Ukrainian staff.
