Italy’s Societa Gestione Impianti Nucleari SpA (Sogin), the state-owned company responsible for decommissioning NPPs, has signed a collaboration agreement with the European Commission’s (EC’s) Joint Research Centre (JRC) on the development and implementation of a common strategy in nuclear dismantling and radioactive waste management activities. The five-year agreement, which can be renewed, was signed by Sogin CEO Gian Luca Artizzu and JRC Director for Nuclear Decommissioning & Waste Management Laurent Jerrige.

Safety upgrades at unit 2 of Japan's Onagawa NPP in Miyagi Prefecture will not be completed in February as planned, Tohoku Electric Power Company announced. The target had been to restart commercial operation in May. Tohoku said it expects a delay of several months for completion date of the safety measures.

In the aftermath of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck the west coast of Japan on New Year’s day, an oil slick, approximately five metres by 10 metres was observed on the sea's surface in front of the Shika NPP in Ishikawa, according to plant owner Hokuriku Electric.

Lower Saxony’s Ministry for the Environment, Energy & Climate has granted approval to PreussenElektra to begin dismantling the 1360 MWe pressurised water reactor at Grohnde NPP (KWG) in Germany, which was closed down in December 2021. “We are implementing the nuclear phase-out decided 12 years ago and ensuring maximum safety for dismantling,” said Environment Minister Christian Meyer.

On the 140th anniversary of the start of its activities, Edison has presented a development strategy to 2030 and its ambitions to 2040 – “Edison 140 years – Towards 2030-2040”. The portfolio of activities to 2030 will see renewable electricity generation represent over 45% of the group's profitability, services to industrial and domestic customers and the public administration will contribute approximately a quarter, gas and thermoelectric production will represent 30%. Looking to 2040, Edison says it “has the ambition of developing new nuclear power if the conditions are created for his return to Italy”.

Germany’s Grafenrheinfeld NPP (KKG - Kernkraftwerk Grafenrheinfeld) has completed cleaning and emptying work on the fuel assembly basin achieving a dismantling milestone known as “water free,” owner/operator PreussenElektra announced. This means that the essential water-bearing systems, mainly the reactor and fuel storage pool, have been emptied and the water has been treated and released.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is providing live data from Japan on the release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi NPP on the IAEA website. The data includes water flow rates, radiation monitoring data and the concentration of tritium after dilution. Fukushima NPP operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), has now begun the controlled discharge of the water into the sea. At the same time, Tepco began transmitting data from various points in the process to the IAEA.

Japanese utilities Chugoku Electric Power Company and Kansai Electric Power Company plan to jointly investigate the construction of a used fuel interim storage facility in Kaminoseki town in Yamaguchi prefecture. The facility would be built on land Chugoku acquired to build a nuclear power plant, plans for which have stalled.

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) has ordered plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to urgently assess the risks of a possible collapse at unit 1 of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi NPP, and to formulate emergency measures as soon as possible to avoid any radioactive leakage. Videos taken during a robotic probe in March showed that the pedestal of unit 1’s containment vessel, the main supporting structure directly under its core, was severely damaged. The underwater robot found the concrete wall was missing in over half of the pedestal, measuring five metres in internal diameter, leaving the reinforcing bar exposed.
