The Imperial College Reactor Centre (ICRC), part of Imperial College London, has become the first reactor site to be fully decommissioned in UK nuclear history under modern regulatory controls. The site was delicensed by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) following years of work to defuel and then decommission the site in Ascot after the shutdown of the consort research reactor in 2012.

A state-of-the-art Glove Box Training Facility for the UK nuclear industry has been opened at Sellafield. Glove boxes are crucial to operations at nuclear sites enabling operators to handle hazardous material in a safe and controlled environment. However, their use requires high levels of skill and dexterity. The new facility will reduce the amount of training done within plants and provide a standardised approach across the sector. It was delivered by the UK Alpha Resilience & Capability (ARC) programme.

The defuelling of the first reactor at the UK’s Hunterston B NPP has been completed, on time and on budget, EDF Energy reported. Reactor 3 was defuelled in 16 months and work is due to start shortly on Reactor 4.

The UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and Sellafield Ltd have announced the start of work to retrieve waste from the 70-year-old Pile Fuel Cladding Silo (PFCS) at the Sellafield site in West Cumbria. Sellafield described it as “a momentous milestone in the decommissioning story at Sellafield as the first batch of waste was successfully retrieved from the site’s oldest waste store”.

Five major companies have made key announcements on their plans to advance small modular reactor (SMR) deployment in the UK. While Rolls-Royce SMR shortlisted three sites for a factory to produce component for its planned SMR; Balfour Beatty and Holtec with Hyundai agreed to support plans for the construction of Holtec’s SMR-160; and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) submitted a Generic Design Assessment (GDA) application for its BWRX-300 SMR to the UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Newly-established development firm Solway Community Power Company has selected the Rolls-Royce small modular reactor (SMR) for deployment in West Cumbria, England. Earlier this week, it was announced that four sites in the UK, including land near the Sellafield site in Cumbria, have been prioritised to deploy the first in a fleet of Rolls-Royce SMR power plants.
