Work to prepare all foreign-owned high-level waste for return to overseas customers has been completed, the UK's Sellafield Ltd has announced. A total of 1840 containers have been prepared for return to overseas customers since 2008, as part of the closing out of commercial reprocessing contracts from the Thorp reprocessing plant.

A new specialist nuclear transport organisation has officially launched today in the UK. Nuclear Transport Solutions (NTS), part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), operates Direct Rail Services (DRS) and Pacific Nuclear Transport Limited (PNTL), which offer rail and shipping services, respectively. The NDA is also in the process of integrating its radioactive waste management businesses.

The second and final shipment of high-level waste (HLW) from the UK to Switzerland has been completed. The waste resulted from the reprocessing and recycling of used nuclear fuel from Swiss nuclear power plants at Sellafield.

Hyperion Power Generation plans to build a small reactor manufacturing plant in the United Kingdom within the next two years. The firm says it plans to use the existing UK supply chain to build its 70MWt (27MWe), self-regulating reactor and that the UK will be its ‘launch pad’ for the European market.

GSE Systems has been awarded an $18 million contract to build a new nuclear power plant simulator for units 3 and 4 at Mochovce in Slovakia. The reactors will incorporate Siemens/Areva control systems.
