UK nuclear trade association, the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) has applied for a justification decision for newcleo’s lead-cooled fast reactor design, the LFR-AS-200. The application makes the case that the benefits of clean, firm, flexible power from the LFR-AS-200 would far outweigh any potential risks. NIA says these are” rigorously controlled by robust safety features, including passive safety systems, built into the design and incorporated into the operating arrangements, in line with the UK’s regulatory requirements”.

Sweden's Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari has announced the launch of an investigation to abolish the country's ban on uranium mining. The move was welcomed by Australia-based Aura Energy, which hopes to extract uranium as a by-product from its 100%-owned Häggån polymetallic project in Sweden.

National Atomic Company Kazatomprom has announced that the Kazakhstan-China joint venture, Ulba-TVS LLP, which produces fuel for Chinese NPPs has completed the qualification process for the production of AFA 3G type A fuel assemblies. Technology holder France’s Framatome has confirmed the announcement. Work on the certification began in March 2023 and took place in four stages, Kazatomprom noted.

US nuclear fuel developer Lightbridge Corporation has completed work in collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to support the development of Lightbridge Fuel. The work was carried out under the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) voucher programme.

Mitsubishi Nuclear Fuel Co (MNF), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd, has announced that it intends to resume production of pressurised water reactor (PWR) fuel at its Tokai plant after receiving approval from Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA). MNF said it had applied to NRA for a pre-use inspection of processing facilities in July 2018 and a pre-use confirmation application in August 2020. “We are pleased to inform you that we have received a pre-use inspection pass certificate and a pre-use confirmation certificate from the same committee on the same day.

Stuk said it had verified plant operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj’s (TVO) readiness to begin the fuel loading. TVO’s Olkiluoto-3 project director, Jouni Silvennoinen said the permit was the most significant step in the commissioning of the plant unit so far. He said systems have now been rigorously tested and “we will be able to begin fuel loading soon”.
The fuel arrived in Olkiluoto in 2018. During the fuel loading, 241 fuel assemblies, comprising about 128 tonnes of uranium, will be transferred from storage into the reactor’s pressure vessel.
The assemblies have all been manufactured in Framatome’s plants in Germany and in France. Framatome said that to carry out the loading operations, a team made up of approximately 40 employees from TVO, Areva and Framatome has been formed. It includes around 15 fuel handlers, employees specialising in the fuel handling operations, and four neutronics engineers in charge of monitoring the core during loading.
