BWXT Technologies is investing a total of CAD80 million in its Cambridge manufacturing plant to support small modular reactors, traditional large-scale nuclear and advanced reactors, in Canada and around the world. The plant is the largest commercial nuclear equipment manufacturing facility in North America.

A new report by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) stresses the need to address the potential impacts of climate change during the licensing of NPPs. The GAO is an independent, nonpartisan agency that works for the US Congress and is responsible for investigating federal government expenditures, was asked to review the climate resilience of energy infrastructure. Its 73-page report, “Nuclear power plants: NRC should take actions to fully consider the potential effects of climate change”, looks at how climate change could affect NPPs and how this could affect the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC’s) actions to address possible risks.

Five sites have been selected for the next phase of the UK Chief Nuclear Inspector’s (CNI’s) themed inspection on climate change. The CNI themed inspections were introduced in 2017 and are designed to examine regulatory matters that are strategic or broader in nature than the Office for Nuclear Regulation’s (ONR’s) more routine regulatory inspection activities. They also raise awareness of important issues and highlight ONR’s regulatory activities and expectations to a wider audience, in addition to the nuclear industry.

The European Commission has launched an Industrial Alliance dedicated to small modular reactors (SMRs), aiming to facilitate the development of SMRs in Europe by the early 2030s. The announcement came as the commission presented its assessment for a 2040 climate target for the EU.

The UK’s planned Sizewell C NPP in Suffolk is planning to power a temporary water desalination plant using electricity from the operating Sizewell B NPP. Sizewell C says the desalination facility “will ensure the Sizewell C project has the water it needs until a new water main provides a permanent supply in the early 2030s.”
