UK nuclear trade association, the Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) has applied for a justification decision for newcleo’s lead-cooled fast reactor design, the LFR-AS-200. The application makes the case that the benefits of clean, firm, flexible power from the LFR-AS-200 would far outweigh any potential risks. NIA says these are” rigorously controlled by robust safety features, including passive safety systems, built into the design and incorporated into the operating arrangements, in line with the UK’s regulatory requirements”.

Construction of unit 5 at Russia’s Beloyarsk NPP with a BN1200 sodium-cooled fast neutron reactor will begin in 2027, according to plant director Ivan Sidorov. The BN1200 will be the world’s largest fast neutron reactor, replacing Beloyarsk 4 with a BN800 reactor, which previously held that record. Sidorov told the Beloyarsk corporate newspaper, Quick Neutron, that work at unit 5 was on schedule. "The site for the new unit has already been determined, public hearings on the placement have been held. In accordance with the programme, we are doing engineering research, we are drilling wells for them," he said.

The BN-800 sodium-cooled fast reactor at unit 4 of Russia’s Beloyarsk NPP has registered a year of reliable and safe operation using an almost full load of uranium-plutonium mixed oxide (MOX) fuel. Russia says this proves the readiness of the closed nuclear fuel cycle technology for implementation on an industrial scale. Beloyarsk 4 is the world's first nuclear power unit to use MOX for an entire year at almost full load. The MOX fuel assemblies (FAs) were produced at the Mining & Chemical Combine (MCC) in Zheleznogorsk, (Krasnoyarsk Territory). Unlike the enriched uranium FAs traditionally used in NPPs, the raw materials for the MOX fuel pellets includes plutonium oxide obtained during the processing of used fuel from conventional VVER reactors alongside depleted uranium oxide, obtained by defluorination of depleted uranium hexafluoride (tails from enrichment production).

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been selected as the core company in charge of the conceptual design of a demonstration fast reactor which the government aims to put into operation in the 2040s. MHI will oversee both the conceptual design as well as research and development for a sodium-cooled fast reactor in partnership with Mitsubishi FBR Systems (MFBR), an MHI Group engineering company established in 2007 to handle the development and design of fast reactors. The design work for the new reactor is scheduled to begin in fiscal 2024.

Experimental fuel assemblies containing mixed dense nitride uranium-plutonium fuel (MNUP-fuel) intended for Russia’s planned BN-1200M sodium-cooled fast reactor are to be tested in the BN-600 fast reactor at unit 3 of the Beloyarsk NPP, Rosatom’s Fuel Company TVEL has announced. The assemblies, which were manufactured and successfully accepted at the Siberian Chemical Combine in Seversk (SCC, part of TVEL), will be loaded into the BN-600 in 2023, in accordance with the reactor test programme.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has established a high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) consortium. The Consortium will help to inform DOE activities to secure a domestic supply of HALEU, which is considered crucial for the development and deployment of advanced reactors in the USA. Membership is free and open to any US entity, association, and government organisation involved in the nuclear fuel cycle. It also may include organisations whose facilities are in ally or partner nations designated by DOE.
