The physical launch of Russia’s multi-purpose fast neutron research reactor MBIR (Mnogotselevoi Bistrii Issledovatelskii Reaktor) under construction at the Scientific Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR) in Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region, is officially scheduled for launch in 2027. In 2028 it will begin supplying electricity to the site and a pilot programme is planned.

A new fission-fusion hybrid reactor will be assembled at Russia’s Kurchatov Institute by the end of 2018, Peter Khvostenko, scientific adviser of the Kurchatov complex on thermonuclear energy and plasma technologies, announced on 14 May. The physical start-up of the facility is scheduled for 2020.

China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has started civil nuclear construction works on a 600MWe (1500MWt) demonstration fast reactor at Xiapu, in Fujian province. The pouring of first concrete took place on 29 December.
