The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has released its annual outlook for nuclear power in the coming decades, increasing its global growth projections for a third year. IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi announced the new projections, contained in the 137-page annual report “Energy, Electricity and Nuclear Power Estimates for the Period up to 2050”, during the opening of the IAEA’s 2nd International Conference on Climate Change and the Role of Nuclear Power 2023: Atoms4NetZero in Vienna.

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) - operator of the Cooper nuclear power plant - has begun the process to identify sites that have the potential to host small modular reactors (SMR) after receiving state-allocated funding for the study.

Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) executive vice-president and chief regulatory operations officer Ramzi Jammal said in a 28 November 2022 letter to OPG that the company had met the conditions for the removal of the hold-point and “fuel may now be loaded into the Unit 3 core”.
Hold points are mandatory checkpoints where CNSC approval is required before the licensee – in this case OPG – is allowed to move on to the next stage of the process to return the unit to operation.
OPG said it will now load 6,240 fuel bundles into the Candu 850 reactor core.
In February 2022, OPG said work had begun on the refurbishment of Unit 1 – the third of four nuclear reactors at the site to undergo mid-life refurbishment.

An Integrated Regulatory Review Service (IRRS) team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has concluded a 13-day mission to Argentina. The IRRS team reviewed all regulatory functions and responsibilities of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ARN) against international safety standards and concluded that the regulator had demonstrated a long-standing commitment to enhancing and promoting nuclear safety. The team also recommended areas where improvements can be made. The mission was conducted at the request of the Government of Argentina and hosted by ARN.

The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) has announced a new nuclear programme to explore advanced nuclear technology as part of its decarbonisation goals. One of its first tasks will be to pursue a construction licence application for a light-water, small modular reactor (SMR) at the Clinch River site, and the authority is in discussions with GE Hitachi to support their BWRX-300 light-water SMR design.
