Italy is a steadfast partner in the challenges facing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today with a long history of achievements in the nuclear field, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi commented, as he travelled to Rome. During his two-day visit, Grossi met with Italy’s President and Foreign Minister, as well as with Pope Francis. Discussions covered a variety of issues including nuclear safety and security in Ukraine, nuclear non-proliferation, and the role of nuclear science and technology in combating climate change.

An IAEA proposal to establish a nuclear safety and security protection zone around Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is receiving strong international support and detailed talks have now begun with Ukraine and Russia aimed at agreeing and implementing it as soon as possible, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi has revealed after a series of high-level meetings in New York.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has revealed that an Integrated Review Service for Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management, Decommissioning and Remediation (ARTEMIS) team of experts had visited Denmark from 1-9 May at the request of the government. The mission concluded that Denmark has developed and implemented a robust and well-functioning system for maintaining and further enhancing the safety and effectiveness of used fuel and radioactive waste management.  However, the team also noted that the national programme for the management of radioactive waste should be further developed and its implementation requires significant efforts.

The PRISMAP network was recently launched which will see more than 20 European academic institutions and research centres pooling their knowledge, expertise and infrastructure to speed up the introduction of new medical radioisotopes. The network aims to provide a sustainable source of high-purity grade novel radionuclides for medical research.

Ukraine's nuclear regulator has issued a permit to SSE Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP) for the retrieval of undamaged used nuclear fuel from the ISF-1 interim used fuel wet storage facility. The fuel will be moved into the new ISF-2 dry storage facility. The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) has also issued a licence for the operation of the Liquid Radioactive Waste Treatment Plant at the Chernobyl site.
