The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says Director General Rafael Grossi will brief the UN Security Council on his proposals for safeguarding Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) on 30 May. “Grossi is planning to brief the UN Security Council on the nuclear safety and security situation” during a meeting chaired by Switzerland, according to a statement sent by the Agency to AFP.

Construction has begun of a 23-kilometre-long pipe that will transport nuclear-generated heat from the Haiyang nuclear power plant in China's Shandong province to a wider area, State Power Investment Corp (SPIC) announced. The plant started providing district heat to the surrounding area in November 2020.

There were 438 commercial nuclear power plants in operation in 33 countries at the end of 2022, according to data from the Swiss Nuclear Forum.

The forum said six new nuclear power plants went online in 2022 and five units were permanently shut down.

The six new plants were Olkiluoto-3 in Finland, the first new reactor to start up in Western Europe in around 15 years, Fuqing-6 and Hongyanhe-6 in China, Kanupp-3 in Pakistan, Shin-Hanul-1 in South Korea and Barakah-3 in the United Arab Emirates.
