The sale of the Indian Point Energy Center by Entergy Corporation to subsidiaries of Holtec International has been completed. The plant, which shut down at the end of April after 45 years in operation, is the third project in Holtec's decommissioning fleet.

Entergy Corporation's Indian Point unit 3 will be shut down tomorrow after nearly 60 years of nuclear power generation at the site in New York state. The closure will bring to an end a world record-breaking run for the pressurised water reactor (PWR).

A joint agreement has been reached between the State of New York, Entergy, Holtec and other stakeholders to provide for the transfer of the Indian Point nuclear power plant to Holtec for decommissioning and site remediation. It also resolves pending litigation concerning the post-shutdown transfer of plant licences when the final unit at the site shuts down later this month.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved the transfer of the Indian Point nuclear power plant's licences from Entergy Nuclear Operations to Holtec International, as owner, and Holtec Decommissioning International (HDI), as decommissioning operator. The transfer will help facilitate the sale of the plant from Entergy to Holtec for expedited decommissioning after the final operating unit shuts down in April next year.

US-based Climate Coalition is urging New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to suspend the closure of the Indian Point nuclear power plant, due to take place later this month. Closing the plant now will add unnecessarily to New York City's vulnerability as state resources are stretched dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, the group says.
