US-based EnergySolutions announced on 12 November that it has completed the physical work at the La Crosse Boiling Water Reactor (LACBWR) Decommissioning Project. This includes remediation and removal of radioactive material including confirmation surveys and inspections necessary to demonstrate compliance with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved Licence Termination Plan.

All licences and assets of unit 2 of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania will be transferred to a subsidiary of EnergySolutions under an agreement signed yesterday by US utility FirstEnergy and EnergySolutions. The reactor, which suffered a partial meltdown in 1979 and never reopened, will then be decommissioned.
