Vibrations detected during pre-operational testing at unit 3 of Georgia Power’s Vogtle NPP in the US are likely to further delay start-up of the unit. The vibrations, associated with some piping within the cooling were identified by Southern Nuclear Operating Company. Georgia Power, a subsidiary of Southern Co, is currently building Vogtle units 3 & 4, in Waynesboro Georgia. They will be the first new nuclear units built in the US in more than 30 years.

US Georgia Power has announced that fuel load into the reactor core at unit 3 of the Vogtle NPP is underway, marking “a milestone toward start-up and commercial operation of the first new nuclear units to be built in the US in more than three decades”.

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (Tepco) says it will have to delay to late 2023 the removal of melted nuclear fuel debris from the unit 2 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP while adjustments are made to the robotic arms which will undertake the work. Tepco had initially planned to start the debris removal on a trial basis in 2021 but postponed it to 2022 in face of the coronavirus pandemic.

US Southern Company has reported second-quarter earnings of $1.1 billion in 2022 compared with $372 million in 2021. However, Southern increased the cost estimate for its Georgia Power utility’s share of the two nuclear reactors under construction at units 3 & 4 of the Vogtle plant in Georgia. The Vogtle reactors, already billions of dollars over budget and years behind schedule, are the only new nuclear power units under construction in the USA.

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project says that the impact of COVID-19 means that its current schedule, of first plasma in 2025 and the start of deuterium-tritium operation in 2035, will need to be delayed, with the new timetable to be finalised and announced after the appointment of a new director general.

Dr Bernard Bigot, Director-General of the Iter Organisation passed away on 14 May “due to illness”. Iter said he was “an inspirational leader for more than four decades across multiple fields of science and energy” and that his personal dedication and commitment to Iter over the past seven years shaped every aspect of the project”. Iter added: “While his untimely passing will be felt as a tragic blow to the global fusion community, Dr Bigot’s careful design and preparation of the Iter senior management team in recent years gives reassurance of the project’s continued success.”

Global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions are on course to increase by 1.5 billion tonnes in 2021 - the biggest annual rise in emissions since 2010, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). This increase, reversing most of last year's decline caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, is being driven by a strong rebound in demand for coal in electricity generation.
