Workers at the UK’s former fast reactor test facility at Dounreay in Scotland - which operated from 1955 to 1994 - have completed the first in a series of campaigns to seal the waste containers into place in the two near-surface low-level waste (LLW) disposal vaults at the site.

The Magnox reprocessing plant at the Sellafield site in Cumbria has reprocessed the final box of used fuel from the UK's fast reactor programme being stored in the plant's ponds. Meanwhile, preparations are being made for the demolition of the iconic Pile One chimney that dominated the landscape over Sellafield for decades.

The UK-based Nuclear Decommissioning Ltd (NDL) consortium has won a multi million pound design contract related to the Prototype Fast Reactor Facility (PFR) decommissioning project at Dounreay in Scotland. Joint venture group NDL brings together four nuclear decommissioning businesses – James Fisher Nuclear (JFN), Shepley Engineers, React Engineering and Tetra Tech – appointed to support the clean-up and demolition of former experimental fast reactor site at Dounreay, being caried out by Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DSRL) on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

The UK Ministry of Defence has invited firms to tender for work to decontaminate and dismantle the Vulcan Naval Reactor Test Establishment (NRTE) - formerly HMS Vulcan - which houses prototype nuclear propulsion plants of the type operated by the Royal Navy.
