ČEZ said Elektrárna Dukovany II, the wholly owned subsidiary set up to implement the new-build project, will now analyse the bids and negotiate with the three bidders. The bidders will then submit final bids by the end of September 2023.
Majority state-owned ČEZ, which launched the Dukovany expansion tender in March, said it expects the contracts to be finalised in 2024.
The initial bids are the basis for clarifying technical and commercial parameters, but not for the actual selection or exclusion of contractors, ČEZ said.
EDF’s reactor technology is the EPR, KHNP’s the APR-1400 and Westinghouse’s the AP1000. All three reactor types have seen commercial operation or are under construction in different countries.
Two EPRs and four AP1000s are commercially operational in China, while the APR-1400 is operated commercially in South Korea and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Additionally, EPR new build projects are near completion at Olkiluoto in Finland and Flamanville in France, while construction is under way of two EPR units at Hinkley Point C in England. Two APR-1400s are in the commissioning stage and two are operating commercially at Barakah in the UAE.
ČEZ said there has been progress on preparation for the project. In 2019, the environment ministry approved an environmental impact assessment. Last year, Elektrárna Dukovany II received a siting permit from the State Office for Nuclear Safety and a generating facility authorisation from the ministry of industry and trade. The zoning procedure has begun, with the company applying to the building authority in June 2021.

Reports in Seoul said the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Meti) is in talks with Mr Yoon’s transition team to establish the 4th Energy Basic Plan in the third quarter to include the energy policy of the incoming government.
South Korea has set the country’s Energy Basic Plan every five years, and the third plan was announced in June 2019. If the 4th plan is unveiled later this year, it would be set up two years earlier than the initial plan.
Outgoing president Moon Jae-in’s policy had been to retire the country’s 24 reactors, which supply about 30% of its electricity generation, and refrain from building new ones.

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) said 100% power means that Unit 1 is generating 1,400 MW of electricity from a single generator connected to the UAE grid. This makes the Unit 1 generator the largest single source of electricity in the UAE.
Achieving 100% power is one of the final steps of the power ascension testing phase of the startup process for Unit 1. Plant operator Nawah Energy, an Enec subsidiary, will now carry out a series of tests before the reactor is safely shut down in preparation for the check outage. During this period, the Unit 1 systems will be examined and any planned or corrective maintenance carried out.
The Barakah nuclear station, in the Al Dhafra region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, is one of the largest nuclear energy new-build projects in the world, with four APR-1400 units supplied by South Korea. Construction began in 2012.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) on 1 August announced that its operating and maintenance subsidiary, Nawah Energy Company (Nawah) had successfully started up unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, located in the Al Dhafrah Region of Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The loading of 241 fuel assemblies at the South Korea-supplied plant – the first in the Arab world – began last month after the receipt of an operating licence from the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) on 17 February.
The licence authorises the plant’s operation for 60 years. It also gave the green light for fuel loading to begin.
The fuel load was led by a team of FANR-certified fuel operators, with mostly Emirati experts who were trained in the APR-1400 reactor technology in South Korea.

The dome structure has been completed at unit 4 of the Barakah NPP in the United Arab Emirates. The dome is a structural component of the containment building, which houses the nuclear reactor vessel, steam generators and other major equipment. The unit's reactor coolant loop pipe welding and the setting of other key equipment have also been completed, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) said on 9 April.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) has completed installation of steam generators and reactor vessel (RV) at unit 4 of the Barakah NPP in the United Arab Emirates, the final major components to be installed at the plant, Enec announced on 14 August. Four South Korean APR-1400 reactors are under construction at Barakah. Enec said unit 4 is now more than 52% complete. Unit 1 is 96% complete; unit 2, 85%; and unit 3, 75% complete. Overall construction is more than 82% complete.

An agreement to buy electricity generated from the United Arab Emirates' Barakah NPP was signed on 1 November between Barakah One PJSC - an independent and jointly owned subsidiary of the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (Enec) and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) - and the Abu Dhabi Water and Electric Company (ADWEC). It establishes the contractual framework for the electricity produced at Barakah over the next 60 years. Barakah One was established by Enec and Kepco in October to represent the commercial and financial interests of the Barakah project. Enec is the majority owner, with 82%, while Kepco holds 18%. Another subsidiary, Nawah - also owned 82% by Enec and 18% by Kepco - will operate and maintain the plant. Four Korean-designed APR-1400 pressurised water reactors are under construction at Barakah, with unit 1 expected to start up in 2017. All four nuclear units are now over 72% complete.
