World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.

JSC Ruspolimet in Vyksa (Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region) has shipped the lead transport and packaging container TUK-137T.A1 manufactured for the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Turkiye. The equipment was manufactured by Ruspolimet for Tekhsnabexport (Tenex), Rosatom’s sales and trading division.

Almasadam Satkaliyev, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy says "Rosatom has a certain advantage as supplier of the nuclear island" for a planned NPP. While the authorities continue to look for a contractor and supplier of equipment for construction of its planned NPP, they understand that Russia’s Rosatom has advantages in this area, he noted.

Rosatom in the third quarter of this year will begin work on the commissioning unit 1 of the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Turkey. Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev made the announcement during a visit to the construction site. He was accompanied by the Director General of Project Company Akkuyu Nukleer, Anastasia Zoteeva, and other construction managers. Following talks with Turkish Minister of Energy & Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez Likhachev also had meetings with representatives of Turkish contracting organisations involved in construction and installation work at the NPP site. Discussion included project financing, plans for the construction of a residential town for plant operators, fuel deliveries and the possibilities for participation of Turkish companies in other foreign projects of Rosatom.

Rosatom's Director General Alexei Likhachev said, after talks with Turkey's energy minister Fatih Dönmez, that nuclear fuel would be delivered to Akkuyu this spring, with construction to be completed in the third quarter and then "proceed to commissioning".

The Akkuyu NPP, currently under construction in Turkey, was not damaged by the major earthquake that recently struck central Turkey and northwest Syria, according to Rosatom. Anastasia Zoteeva General Director of Russian project company Akkuyu Nuclearsaid earth tremors of about magnitude 3 were felt “but our specialists have not revealed any damage to building structures, cranes and equipment”. However, she added, “We are nevertheless carrying out extensive diagnostic measures to make sure that construction and installation operations can continue safely.”
