The presidents of Turkey and Russia have remotely inaugurated the construction of a third nuclear reactor of Akkuyu power station in southern Turkey, vowing to continue their close cooperation, press reports said.

Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said a “solemn ceremony” was also held at the site of the nuclear station and attended by Turkish energy and natural resources minister Fatih Dienmez, Rosatom director-general Aleksey Likhachev and Akkuyu Nuclear chief executive officer Anastasia Soteeva.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the facility would launch Turkey into the “league of nuclear energy countries” and called it a “symbol of Turkish-Russian cooperation.” Nuclear power is a “strategic step” for energy security, Mr Erdogan said.

Rosatom announced today that first concrete has been poured for the third unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant under construction in the Mersin province of Turkey. The Russian and Turkish heads of state joined the ceremony held to mark the event by video link. The Akkuyu nuclear power plant project is based on an intergovernmental agreement the two countries signed in 2010.
