Unit 1 of the Akkuyu NPP in Turkey will be launched on time, by the 100th anniversary of the republic, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a recent meeting with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan. "Our colleagues from governments and companies that are engaged in practical work are implementing all the plans. This also applies to the investment process and the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. Work is proceeding according to plan," he said. He noted that now about 20,000 people are working at the site, adding that it is planned to deliver nuclear fuel to the plant in May 2023 in preparation for the start-up of unit 1.

A high-ranking Egyptian delegation headed by the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt, Mohammed Shaker, paid a working visit to one of the largest machine-building enterprises in Russia, JSC Tyazhmash on 30 July. The delegation also included: the Chairman of the Egyptian Nuclear Power Plants Authority (NPPA) Amged El-Wakil; NPPA Vice President Mohammed Ramadan; the Chairman of the Nuclear and Radiation Control Department of Egypt, Sami Atalla; Rosatom’s First Deputy General Director for Nuclear Energy and President of JSC ASE, Alexander Lokshin; the Deputy Head of the Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision, Alexey Ferapontov, Samara Region Governor Dmitry Azarov; the General Director of Tyazhmash JSC Andrey Trifonov, as well as project teams of the Rosatom engineering division and NPPA.

Rosatom announced today that first concrete has been poured for the third unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant under construction in the Mersin province of Turkey. The Russian and Turkish heads of state joined the ceremony held to mark the event by video link. The Akkuyu nuclear power plant project is based on an intergovernmental agreement the two countries signed in 2010.

Bulgaria is seeking private investors to build the Belene NPP, which was cancelled in 2012, Prime Minister Boiko Borisov said on 11 May during a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Reuters reported. Bulgaria cancelled the project after failing to find foreign investors and under pressure from Brussels and Washington to limit its energy dependence on Russia. Since then Bulgaria has opened a gas link with Romania and is working to connect its gas network with Greece, Turkey and Serbia to diversify its suppliers.
