The US Department of Energy (DOE), through the National Reactor Innovation Centre (NRIC), has awarded $3.9m to Radiant, Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (UNSC) and Westinghouse to design experiments to test microreactor designs in the planned Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) test bed at Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

The US Administration, through the Department of Energy (DOE), have issued a Request For Information (RFI) to inform a $500 million programme funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to place clean energy demonstration projects on current or former mine lands across the USA. The Clean Energy Demonstrations on Current and Former Mine Land Program, operated through DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, will fund clean energy on mine land to benefit communities and their economies.

Westinghouse has submitted a pre-application regulatory engagement plan (REP) with the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for its eVinci microreactor, detailing the planned pre-licensing application interactions with the regulator. An REP helps reactor developers' early interactions with NRC staff and can reduce regulatory uncertainty and add predictability to licensing advanced technologies.

Consideration of small modular reactors (SMRs) for the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico is advancing to the second stage. Having concluded such a deployment was feasible, the Nuclear Alternative Project (NAP) is now looking at siting requirements. Speaking at World Nuclear Association's Annual Symposium yesterday, Eddie Guerra of NAP said the results of a study currently underway "will help to move the discussion how the sites will fit and how they will align with the minigrids already planned."
