US-based fission technology company Oklo is to merge with AltC. Oklo said in a statement it believed roughly 40% of the Fortune 500 companies are committed to an emissions-free future, with some $2 trillion expected for power generation alone. "Oklo is pursuing two complementary tracks to address this demand: providing reliable, commercial-scale energy to customers; and selling used nuclear fuel recycling services to the US market," the company said.

US fusion energy tech startup Helion Energy has signed an agreement to provide Microsoft with electricity from its first fusion power plant. Constellation will serve as the power marketer and will manage transmission for the project. Helion said the plant is expected to be online by 2028 and will target power generation of 50 MW or more after a one-year ramp up period. The companies did not disclose financial or timing details of the power purchase agreement, or which Microsoft facilities would get fusion-generated electricity.

Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a Massachusetts-based nuclear fusion startup, has raised more than $1.8bn in the largest private investment ever in the industry.

Investors in the latest funding round include Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and George Soros via his Soros Fund Management, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Other investors in the company’s most recent funding round include Google, Silicon Valley venture-capital firm DFJ Growth and Salesforce chief executive officer Marc Benioff’s TIME Ventures.

CFS has raised more than $2bn in funding since it was founded in 2018.
