UK-based nuclear fusion company Tokamak Energy said it is developing new laser measurement technology crucial for controlling extreme conditions inside future fusion power plants and delivering clean energy to the grid.

UKAEA said that following a resolution to grant planning permission South Oxfordshire District Council planning committee, construction of the plant is expected to start this summer.
When construction of the building is complete, US-based General Fusion – the magnetised target fusion company that designed the demo plant – will lease the building from UKAEA.
General Atomics said the plant will become the world’s largest and most capable prototype for a magnetised target fusion power plant – a prototype intended to demonstrate a massive step forward in practical fusion energy.
The facility is the result of over a decade of development; it assembles proven components into a scaled version of our commercial machine.

A consortium of nuclear fusion experts led by Atkins - a member of the SNC-Lavalin group - and Assystem, a specialist in energy transition, has been appointed by the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) as a service delivery partner for engineering for its Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) programme, which aims to demonstrate the commercial viability of generating energy using nuclear fusion.

Canadian company General Fusion is to build and operate a plant to demonstrate its nuclear fusion technology at UKAEA's Culham Campus near Oxford in the UK. The Fusion Demonstration Plant (FDP) will pave the way for a commercial pilot plant using Magnetised Target Fusion (MTF) technology and is expected to begin operations in 2025.

Assystem’s Sunderland engineering team will lead two crucial aspects of the UK’s STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) fusion project – Breeder Blanket and Materials Database, Assystem said on 20 December. STEP is being designed at the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s (UKAEA’s) site at Culham in Oxfordshire. Assystem’s team of engineers will be contributing from their bases in Sunderland, Derby and Blackburn. Assystemhas experience delivering fusion projects including leading the design of the Divertor Remote Handling System (DRHS) for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), under construction in France. The DRHS is a robotic arm that can operate inside the extremely hot environment of the fusion reactor.

David Kingham, CEO of UK based Tokamak Energy says experimental and theoretical research has shown 'spherical' tokamaks to be a "fast route to fusion" compared with more "conventional" tokamak devices such as Joint European Torus (JET). He was addressing a 25 January International Energy Agency (IEA) meeting on fusion power. Tokamak Energy was invited to the meeting as "one of the three most promising fusion concepts", along with General Fusion and Tri-Alpha Energy.
