Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection (Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz - BMWK) has announced that it will extend the possible operation of two of its three remaining nuclear power plants until mid-April 2023 to provide an "emergency reserve" this winter in face of the current energy crisis resulting from sanctions on Russian oil and gas. The plants are scheduled for closure in December in line with Germany’s nuclear phase-out plan.

The US-led Leaders’ Summit on Climate, held on 22 and 23 April as a video conference, attracted 40 world leaders (presidents and prime ministers) including Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Also taking part were some 24 other speakers at ministerial level (environment, defence, economy) in addition to Pope Francis and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, as well as almost 40 heads of environmental organisations, indigenous communities and leading businessmen, including Bill Gates. The event coincided with Earth Day, an annual event first held in 1970.

Foratom has welcomed the European Council's decision to remain technology neutral in its strategy on financing sustainable growth and the transition to a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy, but it urges the European Commission to establish a group with expertise in nuclear life-cycle technologies to advise on its EU-wide classification system, or 'taxonomy', the implementation of which has been postponed by two years.

Siemens and Rosatom are in negotiations to form a cooperative venture that will strengthen their positions in the nuclear market, which has fuelled speculation that Europe's largest engineering company could create a joint venture with Atomenergoprom, an affiliate of Russia's state nuclear corporation.
