Péter Szijjártó, recently confirmed by parliament as Hungary’s minister of foreign affairs and trade, has told parliament’s economic committee that, in response to the looming energy crisis, the government will work to speed up the expansion of the Paks NPP. Szijjártó's had been re-nominated for the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations in the new government, which is now being formed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, following his election victory.

The European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (Ensreg) has approved the preliminary report on a peer review of the new Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets. Adopted by consensus on 3 March, the report follows a mission by Ensreg technical experts to the plant site on 9 and 10 February.

The Belarus Deputy Energy Minister, Mikhail Mikhadyuk, said on 3 September that Belarus will have foreign markets for electricity produced by its nuclear power plant under construction in Ostravets, even after the Baltic states announced plans to boycott the energy if the power plant becomes operational, according to Belarusian state news agency BelTA reports.

The Belarusian nuclear power station near the border with Lithuania. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania will not buy electricity from Belarus after an agreement was reached about buying electricity from third countries, local press reports said.

Under the agreement, the trade in electricity with Belarus will stop when the Belarusian nuclear power plant near Ostrovets in western Belarus begins operation and a system of certificates showing the origin of electricity will be introduced.

Electricity from Ostrovets, where two reactors are under construction, would otherwise reach Baltic markets through Latvia, which buys electricity through the Russian grid. Latvia agreed not to buy electricity from Ostrovets last week.

The new agreement is valid until the synchronisation of the Baltic electricity systems at the end of 2025.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Alexei Goncharuk on 27 November announced the dismissal of Yuri Nedashkovsky, head of nuclear utility Energoatom.

“It was the initiative of the Minister of Energy and the Environment Alexei Orzhel,” Goncharuk said. He added, “We are now dismissing dozens of people who worked in previous years. In most cases, the reason for dismissal is incompetence and human corruption. He said, “This was long overdue. And there are three reasons for this: the deterioration of Energoatom’s performance, the increase in the number of negative incidents and a procurement investigation with which the deputy of the previous convocation is associated” [he was referring to businessman Nikolai Martynenko, one of the closest associates of Nedashkovsky and of former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
