Kenya has launched a strategic plan and roadmap for nuclear power development. Alex Wachira, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Energy & Petroleum, told journalists that the plan provides guidelines for developing the infrastructure to safely construct, operate, maintain and decommission nuclear facilities. "The strategic plan proposes practical interventions to ensure Kenya commences construction of its first nuclear power plant in 2027 and commissions it in 2034," he said.

Canada-based global asset management company Brookfield has released a White Paper titled “A New Dawn for Nuclear Power”. It says the worldwide drive to net zero “is shining a spotlight on nuclear, a clean, safe and mature source of electricity generation”. Nuclear power “is also gaining more support from policymakers and investors given its ability to promote energy security and energy independence”. These trends are driving a global push to extend the lives and increase the capacity of existing plants, as well as build new reactors with state-of-the art designs and technologies.

The US Administration, through the Department of Energy (DOE), have issued a Request For Information (RFI) to inform a $500 million programme funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to place clean energy demonstration projects on current or former mine lands across the USA. The Clean Energy Demonstrations on Current and Former Mine Land Program, operated through DOE’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, will fund clean energy on mine land to benefit communities and their economies.

Three units scheduled for shutdown in coming years Unit 3 at the Indian Point nuclear power station in the US was shut down in 2021. Nuclear-powered generation has remained relatively steady in the US during the past decade because uprates at existing facilities have offset the retirement of several reactors, the Energy Information Administration said.

The EIA said only one reactor was retired in 2021 – New York’s Indian Point-3 – but three more plants are scheduled to retire in the coming years

Despite a slight increase in the capacity factor of the US nuclear fleet in 2021, US nuclear electricity generation fell to its lowest level since 2012.

Output from US nuclear power plants totalled 778 million MWh in 2021, or 1.5% less than the previous year. Nuclear’s share of US electricity generation across all sectors in 2021 was similar to its average share in the previous decade at about 19%.

US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M Granholm and Canadian Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O’Regan on 24 June met to launch a new updated and revised Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to reinvigorate and expand energy cooperation between their departments, accelerate the clean energy transition to net-zero emissions by 2050, and provide reliable, efficient and resilient grid operations. At the meeting, the USA and Canada also released the North American Renewable Integration Study (NARIS), a first-of-its-kind analysis detailing the benefits of integrating renewable energy across the continent and helping to accelerate the countries’ respective goals to achieve a clean power system.
