The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has received a shipment of used next-generation light water reactor LWR) fuel from a commercial NPP to support research and testing for the first time in two decades. INL said it had received 25 experimental fuel rods irradiated in the reactor core of a commercial reactor. The fuel rods were developed and manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Company with technical assistance from several US national laboratories, including INL.

Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS), a subsidiary of US-based BWX Technologies (BWXT) has been awarded a $428m Phase II contract by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to provide purification and conversion services for highly enriched uranium (HEU). NFS is one of only two Category I nuclear facilities licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to store and process HEU.

Three low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel test assemblies have successfully been tested in Belgium's BR2 research reactor. The Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK-CEN) plans to fully convert the reactor from using highly-enriched uranium (HEU) in 2026.

Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) has declared open the Pilot Fuel Manufacturing (PFM) facility, which will produce the first fuel for testing and qualification for use in the company's advanced Micro Modular Reactor (MMR). The plant will be the USA's first producer of private-sector TRISO and USNC's patented Fully Ceramic-Microencapsulated - or FCM - fuel.

Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) plans to begin operations later this year at its Pilot Fuel Manufacturing (PFM) facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, subject to regulatory approvals. The facility will process feedstock uranium powder into TRISO fuel particles and subsequently produce the company's proprietary FCM fuel in multiple kilogram quantities.
