An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) team has completed a 11-day mission to the USA hosted by the Department of Energy (DOE) and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The nine-person team reviewed the nuclear security regime for nuclear material and nuclear facilities. This included an assessment of the governmental organisations and legislation relevant to physical protection, the regulatory role and processes, procedures and practices for inspection and enforcement and the sustainability of the regime.

US-based BWX Technologies subsidiary Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS) has been awarded a $122m contract extension from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for the down-blending of highly enriched uranium (HEU) into low enriched uranium (LEU).

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has received a shipment of used next-generation light water reactor LWR) fuel from a commercial NPP to support research and testing for the first time in two decades. INL said it had received 25 experimental fuel rods irradiated in the reactor core of a commercial reactor. The fuel rods were developed and manufactured by Westinghouse Electric Company with technical assistance from several US national laboratories, including INL.

US-based BWX Technologies has been contracted by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to process thousands of kilograms of government-owned scrap material containing enriched uranium into High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU). The initial award will total $47m, with a total contract value of up to $116.5m, subject to annual congressional appropriations.

The IVG.1M research reactor at Kazakhstan’s National Nuclear Centre (NNC) in Kurchatov, has resumed formal operation using low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel, following completion its conversion and subsequent licensing.

The US has sensitive nuclear technology at a nuclear power plant inside Ukraine and is warning Russia not to touch it, according to a letter the US Department of Energy (DOE) sent to Rosatom, CNN reported. The letter, from the director of DOE’s Office of Nonproliferation Policy, Andrea Ferkile, was dated 17 March 2023. It tells Rosatom’s director general that the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in Enerhodar “contains US-origin nuclear technical data that is export-controlled by the United States Government”.

Nuclear Fuel Services (NFS), a subsidiary of US-based BWX Technologies (BWXT) has been awarded a $428m Phase II contract by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to provide purification and conversion services for highly enriched uranium (HEU). NFS is one of only two Category I nuclear facilities licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to store and process HEU.

Since it began operating in 1962, it has been fuelled by highly enriched uranium (HEU), considered a nuclear proliferation risk. Belgium’s nuclear research centre, SCK-CEN, plans to replace this with low-enriched uranium (LEU).
