The Japanese government plans to start field testing clean hydrogen production using nuclear power by 2028, Nikkei reported, noting that this followed successful safety tests of the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR). The test was carried out by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) at the Oarai Research and Development Institute in Ibaraki prefecture as an international joint research project under the OECD/NEA (Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development/Nuclear Energy Agency).

The Ontario government has announced the first six projects that will receive funding from the Hydrogen Innovation Fund which was set up in February. This will kickstart and develop opportunities for low-carbon hydrogen to serve as a clean fuel. The Fund plans to invest CAD15m ($11m) over the next three years to kickstart and develop opportunities for hydrogen to be integrated into Ontario’s electricity system, including hydrogen electricity storage.

US-based Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering and SK Ecoplant to conduct R&D on clean hydrogen production. The three companies intend to construct a Hydrogen Micro Hub at the SK Ecoplant’s headquarters in Seoul's Jongno-gu.

The USA's first-of-its-kind 1 MW demonstration scale, nuclear-powered clean hydrogen production facility has begun operating at Constellation's Nine Mile Point nuclear power plant in Oswego, New York. The company said the new facility will help demonstrate the potential for hydrogen to power a clean economy.

NuScale Power, together with Shell Global Solutions and industry participants, will develop and assess a concept for an economically optimised Integrated Energy System (IES) for hydrogen production using electricity and process heat from a NuScale VOYGR small modular reactor (SMR) power plant. The “Development and Demonstration of a Concept for an Economically Optimised IES” project will be completed in two phases. Additional research participants include Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS), Fuel Cell Energy, FPoliSolutions, and GSE Solutions.
