US President Joe Biden has signed into law the bipartisan Infrastructure and Jobs Investment Act. The $1,200 billion Bill, which is a key part of the President's Build Back Better programme, covers all aspects of the economy including provisions for some investment in advanced nuclear reactor demonstration projects and investment in research hubs for next generation technologies such as carbon capture and clean hydrogen.

Nuclear industry organisations from around the world have today published a report highlighting the contributions made by nuclear towards achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The report notes nuclear contributes to each of the 17 goals.

The post-COVID economic recovery and the clean energy transition present a huge opportunity from which all nations can benefit, delegates at the IEA-COP26 Net Zero Summit agreed. Over 40 countries, covering more than 80% of global GDP, population and carbon emissions, took part in the event on 31 March to identify how to work together to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. They included the USA, which re-joined the 2015 climate accord earlier this year.

The International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) latest country report on Turkey and energy policy review notes that Turkey has seen considerable diversification of its energy sector since the previous review in 2016. “Turkey has made significant progress on liberalising energy markets in the last decade, successfully improving predictability and transparency in pricing. However, additional reforms toward establishing more competitive gas and electricity markets will help mobilise needed investments into these sectors,” says IEA Executive Director Dr Fatih Birol in his foreword to the 191-page report.

A tender has been launched to establish a road and rail logistics service to support waste services activities. The intention is to establish contracts with relevant Service Providers to give LLW Repository Limited the ability to safely and efficiently manage (or have managed) transports associated with the UK Nuclear Industry, using road, rail, sea or a combination; for UK and overseas journeys. It is anticipated that the suppliers will propose incentive mechanisms to optimise all return journeys, avoiding empty miles.
