The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has reversed a decision to allow a South Florida nuclear power station to continue running for up to 80 years by ordering a new review of potential environmental risks, including those posed by climate change.

According to AP, the NRC issued an order to reverse a 2019 decision by a previous, Republican-led commission to extend Florida Power & Light’s operating licence for the Turkey Point-3 and -4 nuclear power plants, about 40 km south of Miami, until 2052 and 2053. Turkey Point-3 began commercial operation in December 1972 and Turkey Point-4 in September 1974.

The NRC had previously granted FPL an initial 20-year extension that will allow the reactors to run until 2032 and 2033. FPL said in 2018 that it was filing an application for a second 20-year licence renewal, taking the units’ operational lifetimes to 80 years.
