Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has announced a target of achieving carbon-neutral operations at the Chalk River Laboratories site in Ontario by 2040. It said connecting to the small modular reactor proposed for the site could contribute to meeting this target.

Fusion technology company SHINE Technologies has selected Deep Isolation's technology as its preferred solution for storage and disposal of the high-level waste that will remain as a residue after deployment of SHINE's technology for recycling used nuclear fuel.

Unit 2 of France’s Cruas-Meysse NPP is now operating its first full core of recycled uranium fuel. EDF Nuclear & Thermal Park Director Cedric Lewandowski said this was “a historic step for the relaunch of the uranium reprocessing sector”.

Washington State energy provider Energy Northwest has signed an agreement with Bellevue-based utility Puget Sound Energy to support its programme investigating the feasibility of developing and deploying a next-generation nuclear energy facility.

Puget Sound Energy - the oldest and largest utility in Washington State - is contributing USD10 million towards the feasibility stage of Energy Northwest's programme to develop and deploy a next-generation nuclear energy facility. Energy Northwest has already determined that X-energy's Xe-100 advanced small modular reactor (SMR) is the most suitable design to meet the region's specific needs.

The Governments of the Philippines and the USA signed an “Agreement for Cooperation Concerning Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy” also known as a Section 123 Agreement, on the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in San Francisco, California. The US insists that countries seeking to trade nuclear power goods and services must sign formal cooperation agreements. Such Section 123 Agreements relate to the relevant paragraph of the US 1954 Atomic Energy Act which requires them.

The Philippines' largest electric distribution utility, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), has signed a cooperation agreement with Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) of the USA to study the potential deployment of one or more Micro-Modular Reactor (MMR) Energy Systems in the Philippines.

US-based BWX Technologies (BWXT) has signed a two-phase, two-year contract with the US Wyoming Energy Authority (WEA) to assess the viability of deploying small-scale nuclear reactors in the state. BWXT said it will execute the contract in close consultation with the State of Wyoming and other Wyoming organisations and companies.

If existing inventories of used nuclear fuel were recycled and repurposed as fuel for advanced fast reactors, it could generate zero-carbon electricity for Europe for up to 1000 years, according to international environmental campaign group RePlanet.
