Collaboration between the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), Dell Technologies, Intel and the University of Cambridge is underway to advance the development of the UK’s prototype fusion power plant. Scientists and engineers plan to access supercomputers and AI (artificial intelligence) to inform and accelerate engineering designs of the UKAEA’s STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) facility. UKAEA says the engineering designs of STEP, sited in Nottinghamshire, “will be developed in a highly immersive and connected virtual environment, known as the ‘Industrial Metaverse’”.

The US Department of Energy's (DOE) Frontier supercomputer system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been ranked as the fastest computer in the world, as well as becoming the first to break the exascale performance barrier.

Five US National Laboratories will play a key role in a consortium tasked with harnessing the power of supercomputers to combat COVID-19, Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette said in a video address yesterday. President Donald Trump announced the launch of the consortium on 23 March. The five are Argonne, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge and Sandia.

The US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) has signed a USD600 million contract with Cray Inc to build its first exascale supercomputer, El Capitan. The computer will be housed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California.
