A new publication in the IAEA’s Technical Report Series, Status of Molten Salt Reactor Technology, outlines the current status of molten salt reactor (MSR) technology around the world. It reviews the history of MSRs and takes a look at the current research and development activities taking place. The advantages of this technology, including a smaller high level waste footprint and passive safety features, as well as some of the technical challenges, such as developing components capable of operating in very high temperature environments, are detailed.

US-based X-energy Reactor Company and Canadian power company TransAlta Corporation have announced a partnership to study deployment of X-energy’s Xe-100 small modular reactors (SMRs) in Alberta. The study will be supported through funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta (ERA) and will assess the feasibility of repurposing a fossil fuel electricity generation site for an Xe-100 plant.

Two nuclear start-ups, Stellaria and Thorizon, each in consortium with Orano, have been selected by the French government to receive funding through the France 2030 national investment plan to develop molten salt reactors. Each consortium has been awarded a €10m ($10,8m) grant. The two projects are the result of a collaboration of several months bringing together these three companies with the aim of developing a European molten salt reactor (MSR) sector.

US-based X-energy Reactor Company has opened the first training centre for future operators of its Xe-100 advanced small modular reactor (SMR). The Plant Support Center (PSC) is a 10,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility, which includes a full-scale plant control room simulator, reactor protection system prototype, and virtual reality experience, as well as offices and classrooms.

South Korea's Hyundai Engineering & Construction, the USA's Holtec International and British construction company Balfour Beatty and engineering firm Mott McDonald have agreed to cooperate on Holtec's bid to construct a small modular reactor in the UK.

The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has published the second edition of its Small Modular Reactor Dashboard which tracks the progress of selected small modular reactor (SMR) designs towards deployment.
