The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) has published the second edition of its Small Modular Reactor Dashboard which tracks the progress of selected small modular reactor (SMR) designs towards deployment. NEA says the SMR designs are at various stages of development, from fundamental research on new concepts to commercial deployment and operation of mature designs.

US-based TerraPower has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the UAE’s Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) on the sidelines of COP28 to explore opportunities for the commercialisation and global deployment of Terrapower’s Natrium technology. “Bringing advanced nuclear technologies to market is critical to meeting global decarbonisation targets,” said TerraPower President & CEO Chris Levesque. “TerraPower and ENEC are leading the way in deploying nuclear plants, and this agreement allows us to share our expertise and design experience, and explore the opportunity for deployment of Natrium reactors around the world including additional locations in the United States.”

US fuel technology company Lightbridge Corporation says Texas A&M University (TAMU) has been awarded approximately $1m by the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Nuclear Energy University Program R&D Awards to study the deployment of advanced nuclear fuels in small modular reactors (SMRs). The project will be conducted over three years and will be entirely funded by DOE. The aim is to bring together collaborative teams to solve complex problems.

Workers at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) have completed the transfer of all the used fuel from the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II (EBR-II) from wet to dry storage, a major milestone under a 1995 agreement with the state of Idaho. The fuel was the last to be retrieved from the water-filled storage basin at the Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center (INTEC).

Lightbridge Ltd has completed work to design an experiment for the irradiation of samples of its metallic fuel material in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The work was carried out in collaboration with INL under the US Department of Energy's Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) voucher programme and marks a milestone towards testing of the material in the reactor.
