UK-based First Light Fusion, founded in 2011 as a spin-out from the University of Oxford, has been awarded a £6m ($7.4m) grant from the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to launch its new Prosperity Partnership. Dirat Light will contribute matching funds taking the total programme value to £12m. EPSRC will support the programme until 2028.

UK-based MoltexFLEX has been awarded a research grant by the Henry Royce Institute of Advanced Materials (Royce). MoltexFLEX a subsidiary of Canada’s Moltex Energy, in October announced its FLEX reactor design, which uses molten salt technology. Using the grant, MoltexFLEX will work with the University of Manchester’s Nuclear Graphite Research Group (NGRG) to investigate how the FLEX reactor’s molten salt coolant interacts with graphite, which is used as a moderator.

Moltex Energy Limited subsidiary MoltexFLEX has received a research grant to work with researchers at the University of Manchester to investigate how its FLEX reactor's molten coolant salt interacts with graphite, enabling detailed characterisation work to be undertaken.

A GBP9.4 million ($12.2m) research programme will link experts from the nuclear industry with UK academics and PhD students to tackle challenges in dealing with radioactive waste, the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) announced on 24 September jointly with Sellafield Ltd, and Low Level Waste Repository Ltd. Integrated waste management is one of the NDA's key themes  and the research will encompass 40 projects each lasting up to four years, which will help to build the next generation of nuclear experts and to develop technical solutions, the announcement said.

Oxford-based First Light Fusion (FLF), which is researching a number of alternative research directions to develop inertial confinement fusion ICF) for energy generation, announced on 29 August that it had successfully fired the first test ‘shot’ on one of the six limbs of its newly-constructed pulsed power machine. Machine 3 remains on track to be commissioned into service by the end of 2018, FLF said.

EDF Energy will sponsor a new Franco-British partnership to bring new small, medium enterprises to the new nuclear supply chain. The collaboration between the UK's Nuclear Industry Association SME Partnership and the French Partenariat France Monde Électricité (PFME) will help UK businesses get the support and experience they need to bid for and win nuclear contracts.
