Germany's Federal Association for Final Storage (BGE - Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung) has identified a second research area for investigating terrestrial and airborne geophysical exploration methods. BGE’s GeoMetEr research project aims to develop new measurement methods to help with the minimally invasive exploration of regions selected as suitable for a high-level radioactive waste repository.

The Swedish approval allows SKB, the developer of Sweden’s deep geological repository, to take final steps and preparations for initial construction of the facility close to the Forsmark nuclear power station, about 140 km north of Stockholm.
“It is an historic decision that gives SKB the opportunity to dispose of the nuclear waste that our generation has created,” said SKB’s chief executive officer Johan Dasht. “That is a very welcome message. We are now looking forward to implementing Sweden’s largest environmental protection project.”
SKB said the project involves investments “in the order of” SEK 19 billion (€1.8bn) and will create approximately 1,500 jobs. The project is being financed by contributions that have already been made by nuclear operators to a national nuclear waste fund.

Geoscientists from the US Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and from the Sandia and Los Alamos national labs, are collaborating on the HotBENT project. This is an international field experiment to evaluate how well the natural, clay-based material (bentonite) placed around canisters of buried, high-level waste (HLW) retains its safety functions when exposed to simulated long-term heating.

NASA's Perseverance rover successfully touched down on Mars yesterday, 203 days after being launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida. The rover, which is powered by a Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG) developed and fuelled in partnership with the US Department of Energy (DOE), will explore the Jezero Crater and collect samples that will eventually be returned to Earth.

NASA's Perseverance Mars rover successfully launched today from Cape Canaveral in Florida. The rover, which will be powered by a Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (MMRTG) developed at the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Idaho National Laboratory (INL), will land on Mars to begin exploration in February 2021.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has issued a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) for Holtec International's proposed consolidated HI-STORE interim storage facility (CISF) and made a preliminary recommendation that there are no environmental impacts that would preclude it from issuing a licence for environmental reasons. Holtec proposes initially to store 500 canisters holding around 8680 tonnes of used nuclear fuel at the New Mexico site.

Uzbekistan's preparations to build its first nuclear power plant are gathering pace with a sense of making up for lost time. The Central Asian country became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as long ago as 1994, has 50 years of experience in nuclear research and is the world's fifth biggest producer of uranium.

Canada’s Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) on 16 January completed drilling its first 1000m test hole in the Ignace area. It is one of five sites in Ontario to be investigated for siting a deep repository for the long-term management of used nuclear fuel. The test site is in the Revell Batholith rock formation some 35km west of Ignace.
